Heavy machinery represents a unique risk to workers in a construction site. Almost all construction projects, especially residential and commercial projects the larger ones, use the structures to support large and heavy building materials and equipment that are frequently used to accelerate the process of moving and sometimes the installation of these materials. These machines, though useful, a risk only to construction workers, their practicality belies the possibility of serious injury while using them at a construction site.
Some recent examples illustrate the potential dangers represented by the heavy machinery. A skate, also known as a lynx or a front loader is a common site in construction, is used to move large amounts of dirt or other heavy materials. Smaller a backhoe or other earth moving machinery, is a useful tool for the largest sites of construction. The truck operator could put his fellow workers and himself at risk if this machine is used improperly. In three recent cases, these machines were responsible for serious injuries and in two cases, a fatality. In Alberta, Canada, two men were at work digging a basement when her sled overturned over and pinned the two to the ground. The men were rescued by emergency services and taken to hospital. In a tragic case here in the United States, a young man who had gone to work with his father died when he fell off his father's lap, while sitting on a skid. Preliminary reports indicate that the child was thrown from the vehicle while his father backed up and then was beaten in the head by the scoop full of dirt. In another accident with a skate, a man fell seven stories within one of the vehicles during their participation in the demolition work in Chicago.
These small and agile machines are safer not the only vehicles involved in road construction in earnest. Although not as common in smaller sites of construction cranes still play a significant role in assisting workers at work with lifting heavy pieces of building materials such as floor joists and supporting beams. Accidents cranes up a significant portion of construction accidents. In a recent case in New York, a man died when the arm of a crane fell and crushed operator and was working on a bridge. The reports give no indication of what caused the boom to collapse. Crane Accidents could be caused by different factors or malfunction. In international news, published reports of a crane collapse that killed seven men while working on a railway line in India a few weeks ago.
Often, the injured site workers construction seek compensation for injuries through legal recourse. It is often advisable for any worker or family member of someone who is injured on a construction site to contact an attorney experienced in construction accident to develop an application for construction accidents as soon as possible.
