You do not have to have a flash for a study. Some people use the natural light from a window or skylight, others use light bulbs. Strobes give much light to make his presentation, but do not bother the eyes of his subjects. When you have a lot of light can be used umbrellas or other light modifiers to "soften" the light for a more pleasing effect.
