Most photographers today, both amateur and professional, have a tripod in his Table Top gadget bag for use when photographing small objects in the top has a "table", or for reinforcements at the top of a car, wall or fence when a full size tripod is not available or practical.
There are times, however, if you want the support and vibration stopping of a tripod, but the subject is moving around too quickly - you can not get reoriented fast enough to get the shot: just think about shooting photos of an active toddler in a park. But you really want the firm that offers tripod for sharper shots that can fly long and still be sharp eye catchingly.
Enter the classic table top tripod.

I used this setup several times to photograph Indy race cars going by type in more than 200 miles per hour! I was about 50 to 60 feet away from the track and only criticized my whole body, with the sheath in the chest support to the camera, and press the shutter while moving the pan. Great action shots - period! (Bonus tip - With this technique can decrease the shutter speed to 1 / 60 or 1 / 125 or less, and when you move with the car passing by releasing the shutter in the pan, gives an image that only CRIES OF SPEED!)
And, of course, slow down, you can use on hikes to increase stability and sharpness of photos, while alleviating the burden they carry. And it sets up faster than a full size tripod.
My other, more recent model is the Mini Slik-Pro. These people make many, many tripods of all sizes, weights, materials - you can select only the most suitable for your needs. The tripod folds very small, and comes with a typical (albeit small) Pan head. The small pan head is great for base tables, but it is uncomfortable to use chest of the sheath.
Much easier and more effective, I recommend a lightweight ball Kaiser & Socket Head to replace the pan head that comes with the tripod (do not throw the pan head, there's always times when you still want to use it). When you are actually using the ball and socket head, not may want to completely block the ball head, just use a light load. This gives much more flexibility to move with the subject, while giving you support extra extra sharp pictures.
Leitz Since the model is no longer available (unless you find one used), the Kaiser Slik combination will make a valuable addition your gadget bag, giving you the freedom to photograph fast moving subjects while keeping the camera stable enough to encourage impressions large that you will be proud to display. This is especially true if your camera has image stabilization.
By all means try this valuable technique. It really will help you get bigger photos to make really big prints.
