Chris Saiz, Technical Solutions Engineer with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG & E) met with us in the engineering department of the Portola Hotel & Spa target = "_blank" href = "http://www.portolahotel.com/"> http://www.portolahotel.com/. Portola Chief Building Engineer, Al Hittle George Lewis and Engineering Departmentwere one hand as we began the implementation of an energy level to walk through audit of the existing building to LEED Portola Hotel Operations Building and maintenance certification. The account manager for PG & E (Pacific Gas & Electric), Alex Calvillo, was able to arrange the audit with Chris. Alex was there, and Alicia Kilgore PG & E.

We did not expect to find many opportunities to improve lighting, as the staff at the hotel Portola was committed to energy conservation long before it decided to enroll in the United Kingdom States Green Building Council (USGBC). Undaunted, Chris was able to uncover large areas in the living room of Jack, that could be converted from 50 watt lights Halogen MR16 3 watt LED equivalent. He hastened to note that incandescent lights that could be replaced with CFLs in some of the pressure zones. Chris made an observation point of the intention of lighting. If it was directional, which bent the LED lighting, even for efficiency fluorescent lights.

Portola Hotel has a wide area restaurants serving cuisine and banquets. Chris noted the walk in refrigeration and kitchen. It had been suggested PG & E would provide incentives to acquire or upgrade equipment. This is valuable information for future reference. As material requires major repairs, knowing the incentives for the replacement of equipment and energy saving enables better-informed purchasing decisions.

Similar to most of luxury hotels, Portola Hotel and Spa has a dedicated laundry operation. The hotel features a state of the art co-generation plant that helps make the operation very efficient laundry. This did not stop Chris though. He saw the opportunity to preheat the water before entering the washing machine and talked about technology heat exchange for the operations of the dryer. We also talked about the time of daily use and the potential to change the schedule of operations to reduce the impact of tariffs of rush hour.

We've won some courageous and non-vocal seagulls on the roof. Chris was able to give suggestions improvement on the operations of the refrigeration and air handling units. Many systems have outside air, set at the minimum amount allowed by the code. It is a benefit to bring in more air than the level in an area like the Central Coast Monterey has natural air conditioning. There is less energy used to cool the air and customers get the benefit of more fresh air.

Finally, Chris was able to give us some suggestions on reducing the demand for computers. Chris works primarily in Silicon Valley, so data centers energy management is a core competency for him. He made a point for virtualization products like VMware to reduce the number of servers in the datacenter. Each server generates 255 Watt to 8000 hours per year. It also requires about 350 watts of cooling ... so this can add up! He is also a great management software proponent of energy that could turn any of the 80 computers that use the hotel as they become idle.

We will be at pending a report from Chris on his observations. We will use this report to implement low-cost solutions without cost. Also form long-term capital plan on the basis of the updates that are some great opportunities. This is where the LEED certification process challenges you to a higher benchmark of performance. As result, the Portola Hotel and Spa will have an incredible energy savings, and a great place to stay for the green minded traveler
