Lessons to start a project Breakthrough
Returning to the office after the meeting of the 400 Year Project to launch in September 1995 to help everyone for 400 years worth of progress between 2015 and 2035, my historian's instinct kicks in. After all, a project that would have been such a success should be well documented for the benefit of future generations. The raw video images (without the benefit of shooting tripod) was sent to a video production company who was accused of creating a video version of the presentation.
Only someone totally unjustified full of confidence she never had that reaction. But there I was starting to record what was happening.
Any normal human being would have spent time in hiding with the hope that the burden of the task would take care of yourself! I, however, next turned my attention to planning the spring 1996 meeting.
Although there no idea what we would do in that meeting or how to develop anything to share in the next six months, previously reserved a meeting room and alerted our commission date.
A number of potential volunteers for the steering committee had avoided me after the meeting and also began to follow those people to see if they would be willing to help. Most were wiser than I was and concluded that they were too busy to help: They were probably counting their blessings that will not work on my version of the quest of Don Quixote. For the skeptical listener, this project must have sounded like a waste he could lose much time before running out of fuel.
But get busy proved to be the right first step. Why?
1. Videos helped attract many people to work on the project in the coming years.
2. People who joined the steering committee advised very well in the years following.
3. As soon as I started making mistakes, I learned what worked and could not stop doing those things.
4. By acting as if I knew what to do, I gave all the encouragement necessary to have the good intentions of working on the project.
What is my advice to you?
Act as if you know how to get even when you have no idea. So, pay attention to what works and what does not. Doing more of the former and none of the latter. Come.
