Myths and misconceptions - Portrait of the Artist
Introduction
I would love to personally meet and photograph all my items, but for economic reasons, I work mainly from photographs taken by others.
They show me what the subject looked at a frozen moment in time, and a specific set of lighting conditions. I have no other knowledge of the subject.
The camera does not lie!
During most of the time, our ancestors were accustomed to see the drawings and paintings. There was nothing else.
In mid-nineteenth century, everything changed when photographic images started to become available to the general public. History records the initial inability of people to believe that resembled their photographic portraits. It took little time for pictures to be accepted as faithful reproductions.
Today, I really think that the camera does not lies. Consequently, we tend not to see nothing anomalous in the case of a photograph. This is somewhat ironic given that advances in digital technology, the camera is now most of the time!
By contrast, when we look at drawings or paintings, I now question everything we see.
While Thus the aim of a portrait artist remains (as it always has been) not to produce an exact copy, but to capture an image of an amplification of the materials, although subtle key features and removing others. When I draw a woman's eyes, exaggerating the width of her pupil, and in stressing the feet of his cock.
I had a client not long ago complaining that his friend had drawn with a slight squint. I had the opportunity to demonstrate that the right eye of the friend was clearly more close to the left in all the reference photos supplied. The point is that the client does not dispute the accuracy of your photos, but questioned my drawing.
Thus here's my first problem.
Anything you draw or paint invites challenge, and the existence of anomalies in the reference picture can be increased without knowing it, in my artwork. In essence, I can only hope to produce a likeness of the person in the picture, but sometimes I am responsible if the picture has distorted the image of the subject.
The camera does not lie!
Artists work of imagination
As a painter who seek produce an accurate picture of the item, which logically would be expected to be exempted from the need of a creative imagination. However, customers often find that I know it or be able to see things that are not in your photos.
I know what "eye" and "a mouth" look, and how to draw them. But, I can not imagine what "his" mouth feel that if I can not see the detail that in a photograph. Neither do the image of the form of "your" nose profile if only we have a picture of him from the front.
So here is my second problem.
Abstract artists created from his imagination. Portrait artist of life copy (or photographs). They have always copied.
Can not predict precisely or missing makeup face details of a person. No artist has been able to do this.
Like a camera, I am able to create a 2-tridimensional representation of a 3-dimensional object, but can not operate the process in reverse. I can see a picture and build a 3-dimensional model of the subject in my head, like a person can not do a real-pop camera that has your image.
Abstract
If ever commission an artist to produce a portrait from a photograph, please remember:
Which can only draw or paint what they see.
They have no knowledge of the subject: just always know what they can see or told by the customer.
Photographs poor always will result in poor art. Artworks not sell poor.
